Tuition is a Monster

the brief

Invest529 had a hard problem. Parents knew college was expensive and knew saving early made a difference. They just didn’t feel the urgency—not when their kid was a newborn and tuition was eighteen years away. Research made the gap clear: understanding without pressure doesn’t move money into accounts. Elevation needed to make the far-off future feel present, in a financial services category crowded with rational arguments for saving.

Enter the Tuition Monster—Invest529’s anti-mascot. He shows up the day your child is born, gets bigger and hungrier by the day, and can only be tamed by opening an Invest529 plan. Launched in broadcast TV in 2012, he was an immediate hit and became the face of the brand. Nearly 15 years later, he’s still the face—across video, outdoor, print, social, radio, and a real costume that shows up at sporting events, fairs, and schools, where kids take his merch home and turn their bedrooms into reminders for their parents. The Tuition Monster has helped Invest529 post an average 20% year-over-year increase in new account openings—and in 2017, Virginia Business named him one of Virginia’s most famous advertising icons, alongside the Marlboro Man, Mr. Peanut, and the M&Ms characters.
